Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun - a must! At least 6 hours of direct sun per day. The more sun there is - the more the tree will bloom and grow faster. It originates from sun-drenched Australia. Not suitable for shade.
💧 Irrigation
Extremely drought-resistant! The thickened trunk stores water like a camel. In the summer, water once a week, in the spring/fall once every two weeks. In the winter, it is almost unnecessary. Do not overwater! The drainage must be excellent.
🪨 Land
Excellent drainage is essential! Suitable for all types of soil - sandy, clay, rocky - as long as there is good drainage. In nature it grows in thin, dry soils. In the pot add perlite or gravel.
🌡️ Temperature
Loves heat! Very suitable for the Israeli climate. Resistant to high temperatures and desert heat. Sensitive to cold: not below 5°C. In cold areas (Jerusalem, North) it is worth protecting in the winter or growing in a pot and bringing it inside.
Common problems and solutions
💛 Yellow/falling leaves
Usually overwatering! Remember this is a desert tree that loves dryness. Check drainage and reduce watering. Could also be a lack of light.
🌸 Not blooming
Young or sun-poor tree! The Brachychinton begins to bloom only after a few years. Ensure full sun. Patience pays off!
❄️ Cold damage
The tree is sensitive to frost. If the leaves are damaged by the cold - prune the damaged parts in the spring. A mature tree with established roots will recover.
💨 Wind sensitivity
Young trees may bend in strong winds. Support a young tree with a stake until the roots become established (1-2 years).

Plant information

The Love Tree / Brachychiton populneus ( also called the "Bottle Tree" or Kurrajong) is an impressive evergreen tree from the family of the Asteraceae, native to eastern Australia.

Why the "bottle tree"? The thickened trunk at the base serves as a water reservoir - an amazing adaptation for surviving in a dry climate! As the tree matures, the trunk becomes more swollen and impressive.

Blooms: Small, charming bell-shaped flowers in shades of cream, pink, and white, usually in spring. The flowers attract bees and butterflies. They are followed by woody seed pods.

Size: Can reach 10-18 meters in height! Grows relatively quickly. A young tree grows upright, a mature tree develops an impressive dome shape. Also suitable for a large pot when young.

💡 Professional tips
Planting: The best time is spring or fall. Dig a hole 2 times larger than the roots. Support: A young tree needs a stake for support in the first few years. Pruning: Only for shaping or removing dead branches - the tree does not like heavy pruning. Fertilizing: Once a year in spring with a slow-release fertilizer. 💕
