🌳 Braided Money Tree - Braided trunks and green foliage with a bonsai look

Money Tree (Pachira aquatica) in a 12 cm diameter nursery pot. Several stems were braided together into a plait while they were young and flexible, topped with glossy green, palm-like foliage. This is a living plant - the braided structure and foliage vary slightly from plant to plant.

In nature, the Pachira grows in humid areas, near rivers and swamps, from southern Mexico to Bolivia and northern Brazil. As a houseplant, it is easy and forgiving: bright indirect light, watering when the top of the soil begins to dry, and good drainage. "Money Tree" is a common popular nickname for it.

🌳 Why a Money Tree?

🌀
Braided trunk

The stems were braided when they were young and flexible; over the years, they thicken and the braid remains.

🍃
Green foliage

Palm-like leaves, with 5-9 glossy leaflets per leaf.

😊
Easy to grow

Copes well with indirect light and normal home conditions; requires no special care.

✂️
Can be styled

Light pruning of stem tips encourages branching and denser foliage.

🏠
For home and office

Suitable for a room lit by indirect light - on a table, dresser, or shelf.

🏠 Where to place it?

Important: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Strong direct sunlight can burn the leaves, and in a dark spot, the plant becomes leggy and loses leaves.

🪟 Near an east-facing window

Soft morning light

🛋️ Bright living room

Bright indirect light

💼 Office

Bright, away from A/C

📚 Dresser or shelf

Close to a window

🛏️ Bright bedroom

Copes even in medium light

⚠️ Avoid: Direct afternoon sun, water sitting in the saucer, cold drafts from an A/C, and temperatures below about 10°C.

💧 Care and Watering

💧
Watering

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the soil begins to dry out.
Water thoroughly, drain, and do not leave standing water. In winter: water less.

☀️
Lighting

Bright indirect light - also tolerates medium light, with slower growth.
Strong direct sun may scorch the leaves.

🌍
Soil and Pot

Airy, well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming muddy.
Pot with a drainage hole.

🌡️
Temperature

Normal room temperature is suitable.
Protect from temperatures below 10°C and cold drafts.

🌱
Fertilizer

Use houseplant or bonsai fertilizer during spring and summer, per label instructions.
Do not fertilize in winter.

📝 What is important to know

🌀 About the braid

The braided part remains braided. New growth at the top of the plant does not braid, which is natural. If there is a tie at the top of the plait, check periodically to ensure it isn't pressing on the trunks and loosen as needed.

🍂 Yellowing leaves

The most common cause is overwatering. Ensure the soil drains properly, that no water remains in the saucer, and wait for the top part to dry before the next watering.

🔄 Growth toward the light

The Money Tree tends to grow toward the window. Rotate the pot occasionally so it grows straight and evenly.

✂️ Pruning

Prune gently with a clean, sharp tool, according to the actual shape and growth. Pruning tips in spring encourages branching.

❓ FAQ

❓ Will the braiding unravel over time?

No. The braided part remains, and the trunks thicken over the years. New growth coming out from the top is not braided - that is natural.

❓ How often should I water?

Not on a fixed schedule: water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry, water thoroughly, and empty any excess water. In winter, water less.

❓ How much light does it need?

Bright indirect light is ideal. It can also manage in medium light, but will grow more slowly; strong direct sun may burn the leaves.

❓ Why are the leaves turning yellow and falling off?

The common reason is overwatering or water standing in the saucer. Moving it to a new location or a cold draft can also cause temporary shedding. Check the soil and keep the plant in a permanent spot.

❓ Can I prune it?

Yes. Light pruning of the stem tips, especially in the spring, encourages branching and dense growth. Prune with a clean, sharp tool.

❓ Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is forgiving, thrives in indirect light, and requires no special care - the key is not to overwater.

❓ When should I repot into a larger pot?

When the roots fill the pot or grow out of the drainage hole. Move to a slightly larger vessel with a drainage hole and airy soil, preferably in the spring.

🌳 In short - who is it for?

A braided Pachira is perfect for someone who wants a green plant with a unique trunk and easy care: indirect light, balanced watering, and good drainage. Suitable for home and office, and also as a gift.

💡 Tip: Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the foliage grows evenly and doesn't lean toward the window.
