BEGONIA REX 'RUBY LACE' | KING SOLOMON BEGONIA
👑 Begonia Rex Ruby Lace
Giant burgundy-purple leaves with silvery veins and wavy edges — one of the most dramatic foliage begonias
🎨 Dramatic Foliage | 💨 Humidity Lover | 🏠 Indoor Plant
☀️
Light
Bright to medium indirect light — east, north, or west-facing window with a curtain. Direct sun will scorch the leaves
💧
Watering
When top 2 cm are dry — water deeply. Always apply to soil only, never the leaves — highly susceptible to powdery mildew
🌡️
Temperature
18–24°C — suitable for the average home. Very sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes
🏠
Suitable for...
Indoors only — bright window, shelf, coffee table. Not for exposure to drafts. Intermediate care level and up
💨
Humidity
High humidity — at least 50%. A humidifier is recommended. Do not mist the leaves — it causes powdery mildew
👑
Rex Begonia — The Queen of foliage plants. The Rex Begonia originates from India and Southern China, where it evolved large, intensely colored leaves to capture every ray of light through the forest canopy. The 'Ruby Lace' variety is unique for its deep burgundy-purple combination with metallic-silver veins and rippled, fringed edges that even a jeweler couldn't replicate. Every leaf is a work of art.
💧 Watering — The most critical point ▼

Rex Begonias are picky — they don't like being too wet or too dry. When the top layer (2 cm) dries out — it is time to water. Never allow for completely saturated soil, but don't let it dry out completely either — both can be fatal.

Golden Rule: Water directly into the soil only. Water on the hairy leaves leads to powdery mildew — a fungal disease that is very difficult to treat.

Narrow and shallow pot: Rex Begonias have rhizomatous (horizontal) roots — a wide, shallow pot is preferred over a tall one.

💨 Humidity — The biggest requirement ▼

High humidity (50%+) is a must, not a recommendation. In low household humidity (AC in summer, heating in winter), the leaf edges will crisp and curl.

Solutions: A humidifier near the plant (best). A pebble tray with water beneath the pot. Grouping with other plants.

Do not mist directly: Hairy begonia leaves that hold moisture = powdery mildew. Misting the air is fine, but not the foliage.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: Light and well-draining — potting mix with perlite (20–25%) and coco coir (15%). Fast drainage is essential.

Fertilizing: Balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring–summer), at ¼ dilution only. Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization. Do not fertilize in winter.

Repotting: Once a year to refresh the soil — even if the roots haven't outgrown the pot. Use a wide, shallow pot, increasing 2 cm in diameter.

FAQ
Is this plant suitable for beginners? +
Rex Begonias are suited for those with intermediate experience — they aren't "unkillable," nor are they "set-it-and-forget-it" plants. The needs are specific: indirect light, high humidity, and watering the soil only. Those who master these will grow a spectacular begonia.
What to do if white powder appears on the leaves? +
This is powdery mildew — a common fungal disease in begonias. Immediately remove the affected leaves, reduce humidity on the leaves, improve ventilation around the plant, and treat with Gafracel according to instructions.
Does the plant go dormant in winter? +
Yes — Rex Begonias enter partial dormancy in winter, grow slowly, and may lose a few leaves. Reduce watering by half, stop fertilizing entirely, and don't panic — it will return to vigorous growth in the spring.
Does the plant arrive in a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic nursery pot — we recommend leaving it there for the first month. The nursery pot provides optimal drainage and ventilation.

We have a large selection of decorative pots and planters in the store — feel free to add one to your order.
