Why "Umbrella"? The Schefflera leaves are arranged in an umbrella shape — several small leaflets spread from one center like the ribs of an open umbrella. The Variegata variety adds gold and yellow spots to the green — each leaf is unique. The plant reaches a height of up to 1–1.5 meters indoors and is known as one of the most forgiving houseplants in the world.
📖 About the plant — what makes the Variegata variety special? ▼

Schefflera arboricola originates from Taiwan and Southern China, where it grows as a shrub up to 4 meters tall. The "Mini" (Dwarf) variety is a compact version suitable for the home, with relatively small leaves arranged in groups of 7–11 leaflets per leaf.

The Variegata variety — pictured — displays spots of gold, lemon yellow, and light green on a dark green background. Each leaf is different: some are green with gold stripes, others are almost entirely yellow. The more light it gets, the more pronounced the yellow color becomes.

💧 Watering — the golden rule ▼

The Schefflera is different from most tropical plants — it does not like to dry out completely. Water when the top centimeters of soil are dry, but before it dries out entirely.

The rule: Approx. 150ml once a week in summer, less in winter. Check with your finger — if 2–3 cm of soil are dry, it’s time to water.

Signs of trouble: Black and falling leaves = overwatering. Wrinkled and drooping leaves = lack of water. Never let the plant sit in standing water.

🌟 How to maintain the golden color? ▼

The yellow-gold spots on the leaf lack chlorophyll — meaning the plant relies on the green parts alone for photosynthesis. In low light, the plant will "decide" to produce more green and less yellow to compensate.

To maintain variegation: An east-facing window with morning light, or a west-facing window with afternoon light — this is the best position. Strong direct sun, however, will burn the leaves.

Rotate the plant a quarter turn every two weeks for symmetrical and even growth.

🌱 Soil, fertilization, and repotting ▼

Soil: Standard potting soil with added perlite for good drainage. The Schefflera doesn't require special soil — the main thing is that it drains well and doesn't hold moisture for too long.

Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer, once a month during the growing season (spring–summer). Do not fertilize in winter or during the first month after the plant has arrived home.

Repotting: Every 2–3 years, increase the diameter by 2 cm. If the plant grows and branches out — you can prune up to 30% of it at a time for compactness. Pruning encourages thicker, richer growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the plant suitable for beginners? +
Yes — the Schefflera is one of the most forgiving houseplants. It handles changing light conditions, regular home humidity, and less-than-ideal conditions well. The important point is not to let it dry out completely and not to let it sit in water — everything else is forgivable.
Leaves are falling — what happened? +
Two common factors: Black and falling leaves = overwatering. Yellow and falling leaves = sudden change in location, draft, or cold. The Schefflera is sensitive to sudden changes — try to keep a permanent and consistent location for it, away from air conditioners or cold drafts.
The plant is growing thin and long — what to do? +
This is a sign of lack of light — the plant is "stretching" toward the source. Move it to a brighter location. You can also prune the long stems — this will encourage the plant to branch out and become thicker and fuller. Pruning up to 30% won't harm the plant.
Does the plant come in a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic nursery pot — and our recommendation is to leave it in the pot. A nursery pot is designed for exactly this: maintaining the plant, drainage, and optimal aeration of the soil — much better than most decorative planters (except terracotta).

So how do you combine it with a beautiful planter? Simple — insert the pot as it is into the planter. No need to plant, no need to touch the roots. And if tomorrow you want a planter with a different design — take it out, put it into a new planter, done.

We have a large selection of decorative planters and pots in the store — you can add them to your order.
