Calathea insignis , also known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is one of the most beautiful and impressive houseplants! The long, wavy leaves are adorned with stunning dark green patterns reminiscent of snakeskin, with a dramatic purple-burgundy underside. Like all prayer plants, the leaves move throughout the day - lifting in the evening and opening in the morning. Completely pet-safe!

🌱 Growing conditions
  • Light: Medium to low, diffused light. Direct sun will burn the leaves and fade the colors!
  • Watering: Keep soil moist but not wet. Water when the top layer (2-3 cm) dries out.
  • Temperature: 18-24°C ideal. Sensitive to cold - not below 15°C
  • Humidity: High! 50%+ - daily misting, moist pebble tray, or humidifier
  • Soil: Well-drained mix for tropical plants - peat, perlite and coconut
  • Fertilization: Diluted fertilizer for foliage plants once a month in spring-summer.
  • Water: Use filtered water or rainwater - sensitive to chlorine and minerals
⚠️ Common problems and solutions
  • Brown leaf tips: Humidity too low or chlorinated water. Increase humidity and use filtered water.
  • Leaves curling inward: Lack of water or low humidity. Water and increase spraying.
  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage. Check roots and improve drainage.
  • Brown spots on leaves: Sunburn! Move to a shadier location
  • Faded colors: Too much light. Move away from the window.
  • Falling leaves: Cold, draft, or sudden change in environment
  • Red spider mite: Common in low humidity. Regular spraying prevents its appearance.
  • Leaves not moving: Stress - check growing conditions and give time for acclimatization
💚 Why grow Calathea insignis?
  • 🐍 Amazing example: leaves with a unique snake pattern - no two leaves are the same!
  • 💜 Purple Bottom: The underside of the leaves is a dramatic purple-burgundy color
  • 🌿 Leaf movement: "Prayer plant" - the leaves rise in the evening and open in the morning
  • 🐱 Pet Safe: Non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses - ASPCA approved
  • 🏠 Excellent for shady spaces: Thrives in places with low-medium light
  • 🌬️ Air purifier: Helps improve air quality in the home
  • Statement Plant: A Dramatic Focal Point in Any Space
  • 🧘 Relaxing element: The slow movement of the leaves creates a calm atmosphere
📋 Plant information
  • Scientific name: Goeppertia insignis (formerly Calathea lancifolia )
  • Family: Marantaceae (arrow family)
  • Origin: Brazilian rainforests
  • Height: up to 60-80 cm
  • Leaf width: up to 30 cm long, 5-8 cm wide
  • Growth rate: Medium
  • Plant type: Evergreen perennial
  • Other names: Rattlesnake Plant
  • Toxicity: Non-toxic - safe for pets and children
🙏 The Leaf Movement - The "Prayer"
  • What is it? A natural phenomenon called nyctinasty - the cyclical movement of leaves according to the time of day
  • Morning: The leaves open and spread horizontally to absorb light.
  • In the evening: The leaves lift and fold upwards, like hands in prayer.
  • Why does this happen? The plant regulates its exposure to light and maintains moisture at night
  • Rustling sound: You can hear the leaves moving - natural magic!
  • A sign of health: A healthy plant will move regularly. If the leaves don't move, something is wrong.
💡
Professional tip

The secret to high humidity? Group a few tropical plants together - they create a humid microclimate between them! Another option: a tray with pebbles and water (with the pot standing on the pebbles, not in water). Suitable water: Calatheas are very sensitive to chlorine and fluoride. Leave water in an open container for 24 hours before watering, or use rainwater/filtered water. Perfect location: A bright bathroom or kitchen - where the humidity is highest in the house!
