⚪ Agricol Perlite - Lightweight mineral additive for substrate aeration

Perlite is a lightweight, porous mineral aggregate mixed into potting soil. It alters the physical structure of the mixture - adding air pockets and helping excess water to drain. The bag pictured in the 100-liter volume is Agricol Perlite 4 Light.

Available in 1, 10 or 100 liters - the 1 and 10-liter packs are smaller quantities of the same material. Perlite is not a fertilizer and not a full growing medium for any plant: choose a mixing ratio based on the plant, base substrate, and container.

Choose a ratio based on the plant, base medium, container, and irrigation.
According to the Perlite Institute, potting mixes typically use 5%-40% perlite by volume.

Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and pour from a low height.
Moisten slightly before mixing.

Measure all components by volume, without compressing.
Mix from the bottom up until the granules are distributed throughout the substrate.

❓ Is perlite a fertilizer?

No. It changes the physical properties of the substrate - air, drainage, and weight - and does not provide nutrients.

❓ How much perlite should be added?

There is no single ratio for every plant. According to the Perlite Institute, potting mixes usually contain 5%-40% perlite by volume. For herbs in containers, the University of Maryland Extension recommends 2 parts soilless mix and 1 part perlite.

❓ How do I convert a ratio into liters?

Multiply the volume of the mix by your chosen ratio. For example, 20% of 10 liters of mix is 2 liters of perlite and 8 liters of substrate. A 100-liter bag is enough for 500 liters of mix at a 20% ratio.

❓ Can I grow in perlite only?

Some rooting and hydroponic methods do this, but they require controlled management of water and nutrients. For a regular houseplant, it is used within a mix.

❓ Do I need to wash perlite before use?

Not necessary for normal use. It is recommended to moisten slightly to reduce dust. In a hydroponic system, follow the system's guidelines.

❓ Why does perlite float after watering?
