Growing Conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun - 6-8 hours a day! Essential for flowering and fruiting. Young trees need partial shade protection during the hottest hours. Protected location from wind!
💧 Watering
Loves moisture! Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering during the growing season. Important trick: Reduce watering 6-8 weeks before flowering - it encourages more flowers!
🌱 Soil
Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-7.5), rich in organic matter. Does not tolerate flooding! Sensitive to root rot. Add compost and perlite.
🌡️ Temperature
Tropical-subtropical! 21-32°C is ideal. Needs a hot, humid summer and a cool, dry winter. Highly sensitive to frost! Young trees are damaged at 0°C. Mature trees can tolerate down to -4°C for short periods. In Israel, suitable for coastal and central regions.
Common Problems & Solutions
🌸 No flowering / No fruits
Lack of sun or heat! Lychee needs a hot, humid summer. Cold stress in winter also encourages flowering. Trick: Stop watering 6-8 weeks before the flowering season.
💛 Yellow / Burnt leaves
Young leaves are sensitive to strong direct sun - protect them in the first few years. It could also be overwatering or hard (calcareous) water. Use rainwater if possible.
💔 Cracked fruits
Inconsistent watering! Keep moisture constant during fruit maturation. Sudden water after dryness causes cracks.
🐛 Pests
Aphids, mites, fruit flies - check regularly. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil. Do not spray during flowering - it harms pollinators!

Plant Information

Lychee tree (Litchi chinensis) is a tropical fruit tree from the soapberry family, native to Southern China and Southeast Asia. Cultivated for over 2,000 years! The fruit is considered one of the tastiest and most exotic in the world.

The fruit: A bumpy, reddish-pink peel that peels easily, with translucent-white, juicy and sweet flesh inside with a unique floral fragrance. Resembles strawberry, watermelon, and rose! The size of a large grape or small plum.

Evergreen tree: Shiny dark green leaves, young leaves are bronze-red. Small fragrant flowers in spring. Slow growing - 30-60 cm per year.

Size: 6-12 meters in Israel, can reach 15 meters or more in a tropical climate. Longevity: Can live 100+ years and remain productive for decades. Starts bearing fruit after 3-5 years (grafted trees).

💡 Professional Tips
Fertilization: Balanced fertilizer every few months during the growing season. Mulch: Essential! To maintain moisture and protect roots - but keep away from the trunk. Wind protection: Young trees are sensitive - plant in a protected location. Harvest: Fruit is ripe when the peel is reddish-pink and gives slightly when pressed. Recommended varieties: Sweetheart (small seed!), Mauritius, Brewster. 🍒
