Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun - at least 8 hours a day! This is the key to success. Citrus trees need lots of light to bloom and bear fruit. South or west window. Inside - as much light as possible! Not enough sun = no lemons.
💧 Irrigation
Keep soil moist but not wet! Check when the top 3-5cm is dry then water deeply. In summer - sometimes every day! In winter - less. Excellent drainage is essential! Yellow leaves = usually overwatering.
💨 Humidity
Prefers medium-high humidity (50%+). In winter, the air in the house is dry - spray or use a pebble tray. Too low humidity = brown leaf edges and flower/fruit drop.
🌡️ Temperature
18-24°C is ideal. Cool nights (13-18°C) encourage flowering! Sensitive to frost - not below 4°C! In Israel, excellent outdoors, but in cold winters (Jerusalem, North) - protect or bring inside. Keep away from drafts and air conditioners.
Common problems and solutions
💛 Yellow leaves
Usually overwatering or poor drainage. Could also be iron deficiency (chlorosis) - add citrus fertilizer with iron. Check that the pot drains well.
🌸 Does not bloom / does not bear fruit
Lack of light! Needs at least 6-8 hours of sun. Cool nights (13-18°C) also encourage flowering. Fertilize with citrus fertilizer in spring and summer.
🍂 Leaf/flower/fruit drop
Sudden temperature changes! Move the tree gradually between indoors and outdoors. Too low humidity or irregular watering can also cause this.
🐛 Pests
Mealybugs, mites, leaf aphids - check regularly. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil. Good ventilation prevents development.

Plant information

Lemon tree (Citrus limon) is an evergreen fruit tree from the citrus family. It originates from Asia (India and China) and is one of the most popular fruit trees for growing at home - in the garden or in a pot on the balcony.

Flowers and Fruits: Small white flowers with a sweet, intoxicating scent - appear almost all year round! The fruits develop slowly and can take 6-12 months to ripen. Ripe lemons are light yellow and soft to the touch.

Recommended varieties for home growing: Meyer lemon - the most popular! Sweeter, more resistant to cold, and compact. Especially suitable for pots and balconies. Fruitful from a young age!

Size: In the wild it can reach 6 meters. Dwarf varieties for pots stay 1.5-2.5 meters. Perfect for Israel - our weather is ideal for citrus!

💡 Professional tips
Fertilization: Once a month in spring-summer with a citrus fertilizer rich in nitrogen and iron! Pruning: Remove dead branches and thin out for ventilation - especially in spring. Pot: Change pot every 2-3 years, gradually larger size. Picking: Lemon is ripe when it is completely yellow and soft to the touch - do not rush! Winter: In Israel most areas are fine, but in cold areas - protect or bring inside. 🍋
