Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Myrtle loves full sun! 6-8 hours of direct light per day for best flowering. Indoors - near a southern or western window. In the Israeli summer - prefers partial shade during the afternoon. Lack of light will cause poor flowering and elongated growth.
💧 Irrigation
Keep the soil moist but not wet! Water when the top layer (2-3 cm) dries out. In summer - more often. In winter - significantly reduce. Important: Prefers rainwater or filtered water (sensitive to lime). Do not let the soil dry out completely!
🌱 Earth
Rich, well-drained soil. General soil mix with perlite. Avoid very alkaline soil (pH above 8) - may cause yellowing of leaves (chlorosis). Pot with drainage holes is a must!
🌡️ Temperature and humidity
Ideal temperature: 13-24°C. Not frost-resistant! In winter, place in a cool room (about 10°C) with plenty of light. Medium humidity (40-50%) - does not like very high humidity. In Israel - excellent for the garden and balcony, just protect on particularly cold nights.
Common problems and solutions
💦 Root rot
Caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Signs: Yellow leaves, soft stem. Solution: Well-drained soil, pot with holes, let the top layer dry out between waterings.
🍂 Falling leaves
Usually caused by excessive drying or sudden temperature changes. Solution: Stabilize conditions, do not place near air conditioning or heating, water regularly.
🐛 Aphids and thrips
Appear in hot, dry conditions, especially indoors. Solution: Spray water on the leaves, neem oil, ensure good ventilation and sufficient lighting.
💛 Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis)
Caused by soil that is too alkaline or hard water (lime). Solution: Use rainwater, lower pH with nitrogen fertilizer, or replace soil.

✡️ The four species
Plant information

Common myrtle (Myrtus communis) is an ancient and magnificent Mediterranean evergreen shrub. It is native to the Mediterranean basin and North Africa, and grows wild in Israel. The small, shiny, fragrant leaves release a pleasant aroma when crushed.

Flowering: Beautiful white flowers with many stamens appear in late summer, followed by edible blue-black berries. The flowers are used in the perfume industry, and the leaves in Mediterranean cooking (similar to bay leaves).

Cultural significance: In Judaism - one of the four species in Sukkot. In ancient Greece and Rome - a symbol of love, peace and virginity. To this day it is used in bridal bouquets and wedding ceremonies throughout the Mediterranean.

"Round" variety: characterized by rounded elliptical leaves (as opposed to the "triangular" variety with more pointed leaves). Both varieties are kosher for all four species. The round variety is considered classic and more common.

💡 Pro tip
Pruning: Myrtle is great for decoration! Prune after flowering or in mid-summer. Can be shaped into a ball, a hedge, or even a bonsai. Winter rest: In winter, prefers a cool room (10°C) with plenty of light - this will help bloom more abundantly next summer. For Sukkot: Buy early and keep in a shady place with watering - it will stay fresh! 🌿
