Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun - 6-8 hours a day! More sun = more flowers. In very hot climates - can benefit from light afternoon shade. Ivy geranium prefers partial shade.
💧 Irrigation
Moderate - let the soil dry out between waterings! Water when the top 2-3 cm is dry. Tolerates drought better than excess water! In pots in the summer - maybe every day or two. Do not wet the leaves.
🌱 Earth
Well drained and fertile. Quality potting mix with perlite. Excellent drainage is critical! Does not tolerate "wet feet" - standing water = root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
Loves heat! Ideal 18-27°C. Does not tolerate frost at all! Only take outside when night temperature is above 13°C. In Israel - grows as a perennial in warm areas, or as an annual in cold places.
Common problems and solutions
🥀 Few flowers / no blooms
Lack of light! Needs 6+ hours of sun. Excess nitrogen in fertilizer can also cause leaves at the expense of flowers. Use a fertilizer high in potassium.
🍂 Yellow/falling leaves
Overwatering! The most common cause. Let the soil dry out between waterings. Check drainage. If roots are soft/black - rot.
🌿 Long and thin stems
Lack of light or too high heat. Pinch ends! Encourage dense growth. Move to a brighter location.
🐛 Pests and diseases
Aphids, whitefly, mites - spray with potassium soap. Gray mold / rust - improve ventilation, do not wet leaves, remove infected parts.
Special advantages
🌺 Blooms all summer!
💪 Easy to grow
💧 Tolerates dryness
🎨 Huge variety of colors

✂️ Pinching and Deadheading
Pinching: Pinching the ends of stems encourages dense, branched growth!
Removing wilted flowers: Remove wilted inflorescences - encourages continuous flowering! Cut the entire stem of the inflorescence down to the next leaf.
Pruning: If the plant gets long - cut back by ⅓. Will recover with denser growth.

❄️ The shame - save it for next year!
Geranium is a perennial! You can save it for next year:
Option 1 - Houseplant: Bring inside before frost. Bright, cool place (15-18°C). Water moderately.
Option 2 - Dormancy: Remove from soil, shake off soil. Hang upside down in a cool (7-13°C) and dark place. Soak roots in water once a month. In spring - replant!
Option 3 - Cuttings: Take cuttings at the end of summer - the easiest way to succeed!
