🖤 Anthurium Clarinervium
Leaves with a velvet texture, deep green—almost black—with prominent white veins like marble streaks
🇳🇱 Directly imported from the Netherlands
☀️
Light
Bright indirect light — eastern or northern window. No direct sun — it will burn the velvet leaves
💧
Watering
About 150 ml once a week — when 50% of the soil is dry. Do not let the soil stay wet
🌡️
Temperature
18–27°C — a stable tropical plant. Do not expose to cold below 15°C or AC drafts
🏠
Suitable for...
Indoors only — collectors, aroid enthusiasts, and those looking for an impressive statement plant
💨
Humidity
High humidity — at least 50–60%. A humidifier is essential; low humidity causes brown edges
🖤
"Velvet Cardboard Anthurium" — that is its official nickname, and for good reason. Its leaves are thick, stiff, and textured like velvet — truly like material woven for a plant. Against the deep green-black background, geometric white veins stand out that look like a drawing. It originates from Chiapas, Mexico — where it grows on limestone rocks in the shade of tropical forests.
📖 About the plant — what makes it so special? ▼

Anthurium Clarinervium is one of the "Jewel Anthuriums" — anthuriums famous for their leaves rather than their flowers. It grows in the limestone rock regions of Chiapas, Mexico, where it attaches to rocks in deep shade — making it slightly more resilient than other cloud forest anthuriums.

The leaves — heart-shaped, thick, and textured like stiff velvet — can reach a size of 20–25 cm or more in mature plants. The prominent white veins create a stunning geometric pattern that looks like a design — not nature.

The plant grows to a height of 40–65 cm and a width of up to a meter. Slow-to-medium growth — but every new leaf is an event.

💧 Watering — the most critical topic ▼

The Clarinervium is an epiphyte — in nature, it grows on rocks, not deep soil. Its roots must have access to oxygen and will suffer from overwatering long before they suffer from water shortage.

The rule: Water when about 50% of the soil has dried out — not before. Usually once a week in summer, less in winter. About 150 ml for a medium pot.

Important: Bottom drainage is mandatory. The plant must not stand in standing water, even for a short time. Heavy, clayey soil — completely out of the question.

💨 Humidity — its basic need ▼

The Clarinervium requires humidity of at least 50–60%. In low humidity, the edges of the leaves will start to turn black and dry out — this is the first sign the plant is unhappy.

The best solution: A humidifier placed near the plant. Another option — grouping several plants together increases local humidity.

Tip: Gently wiping the leaves once a month with a damp cloth clears dust that accumulates on the velvet surface, allowing the plant to breathe better.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: A well-draining, airy mix for aroids — perlite, bark, and organic soil. The plant likes slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Do not plant in heavy soil.

Fertilizing: Balanced liquid fertilizer, once every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring–summer), at half the recommended dosage. Do not fertilize in winter or during the first month after the plant has arrived home.

Repotting: Every 2–3 years — the plant grows slowly and is in no rush to fill its pot. Increase by only 2 cm in diameter. Note: The roots are thick and brittle — handle them gently during repotting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the plant suitable for beginners? +
Not entirely — but it is not a particularly difficult plant. It is relatively forgiving compared to other anthuriums, but requires an understanding of two principles: measured watering and a humid environment. Someone who has already successfully grown a tropical plant will do just fine.
Why are the leaf edges turning brown? +
Two common causes: humidity that is too low, or soil that has dried out completely. Check the humidity in the room first — if it is below 50%, add a humidifier. If the humidity is fine, check if the soil has dried out excessively and adjust the watering frequency.
Why have the leaves yellowed? +
Yellow is usually a sign of overwatering or soil that does not drain well enough. Check if the soil stays wet for a long time after watering — if so, improve the drainage or reduce the amount of water. A second possible cause: exposure to too strong sunlight.
Does the plant come in a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic grower's pot — and our recommendation is to leave it in its original pot. A grower's pot is designed for exactly that: keeping the plant, drainage, and optimal soil aeration — far better than most decorative pots (except for terracotta).

So how to incorporate it with a beautiful pot? Simple — insert the pot as is into the decorative pot. No need to plant, no need to touch the roots. And if tomorrow you want a pot with a different design — take it out, insert into the new one, done.

We have a large selection of decorative pots and containers in the store — you can add them to the order.
