The secret is on the underside. Peperomia 'Rosso' is a cultivar of Peperomia caperata. What makes it unique: the small, crinkled leaves are dark green, almost black on top — and a vibrant, saturated burgundy-red underneath. When light shines through the leaf, the red hue glows. The stems are also red. A stunning design element for any corner.
📖 About the plant — why is it so loved? ▼

Peperomia 'Rosso' originates from South America and belongs to the Peperomia family — a massive family with over 1,500 species. The 'Rosso' cultivar was developed as a houseplant favorite.

The plant is compact — growing up to 20 cm in height and width — making it ideal for anywhere: a shelf, desk, or kitchen windowsill. The leaves are slightly thick and store moisture — like a light succulent — which gives it some resilience to occasional neglect.

It also produces flowers — thin, long spikes — but like Begonias, the flowers are less impressive than the foliage and can be trimmed to encourage leaf growth.

💧 Watering — less is more ▼

The thick leaves store water — therefore overwatering is the greatest danger. Root rot is the primary cause of death for Peperomias.

The rule: Water when 50–75% of the soil is dry — not before. Generally, once every week or two in summer, less in winter. Water deeply and ensure full drainage.

Signs: Crinkled leaves = thirsty. Yellow, dropping leaves = overwatered. The plant will tell you.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: A light, well-draining mix — houseplant soil with perlite. You can also use a cactus mix with added compost. The main thing is that it shouldn't hold moisture for too long.

Fertilizing: Diluted liquid fertilizer (half dose), once every month or two during the growing season (spring–summer). Do not fertilize in winter.

Repotting: Every 2–3 years — the plant grows slowly and isn't in a rush to outgrow its pot. Only go up 2 cm. A pot that is too large = excess wet soil = rot.

FAQ
Is the plant suitable for beginners? +
Absolutely yes — Peperomia 'Rosso' is one of the easiest houseplants. It handles standard indoor humidity, is relatively resilient to neglect due to its thick leaves, and does not require special conditions. The only thing to remember: do not overwater.
Leaves are falling off — what happened? +
The most common cause — overwatering. Check if the soil is still wet and stop watering until it dries out. Second cause: sudden change of location or a cold draft. Peperomias don't like "surprises" — keep it in a stable location.
Does the plant come with a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic nursery pot — and our recommendation is to leave it there. A nursery pot is designed for exactly that: keeping the plant, drainage, and optimal soil aeration — much better than most decorative pots (except for terracotta).

So how do you style it with a pretty pot? Simple — place the plastic pot as-is into the decorative pot. No need to plant, no need to touch the roots. And if you want a different style tomorrow — take it out, place it in a new pot, done.

We have a large selection of decorative pots and containers in our shop — you can add one to your order.
