An avocado tree is every plant lover's favorite project! Who hasn't tried to germinate an avocado seed in water? The large, green leaves create an impressive houseplant that brings a tropical vibe to any space. In Israel, it can be grown outdoors in warm climates, and indoors it will become a beautiful foliage plant (a homegrown fruit - rare but not impossible!). Relatively easy to grow, rewarding, and perfect for those who want to feel like a real gardener!
🥑 How to sprout an avocado seed?
🌱 Growing conditions
- Light: Bright light to full sun. The more light, the denser the plant will be.
- Watering: Regular but do not overwater! Let the top layer dry out between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Occasional spraying will help
- Temperature: 15-30°C. Sensitive to frost! Below 10°C - bring inside
- Soil: Rich, well-drained. Dislikes wet feet.
- Fertilization: Balanced fertilizer once a month in spring-summer
- Pot: A pot with good drainage holes, large enough for the roots
⚠️ Common problems and solutions
- Brown leaves at the edges: Salt in the water or dryness. Use filtered water, increase humidity.
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering! Reduce and check drainage
- Leaves falling: environmental change, cold, or lack/excess of water
- Tall and thin plant: lack of light. Move to a brighter location and trim the top.
- Seed not sprouting: Be patient! It can take up to 8 weeks. Make sure the water is clean.
- Mold on the kernel: contaminated water. Change the water and wash the kernel.
- Pests: mites, aphids - treat with potassium soap

Want a dense avocado tree, not a long and thin one? When the sprout reaches a height of 30 cm - cut the top in half! It sounds cruel, but it will encourage branching and the plant will be denser and more beautiful. Repeat the cut every time the branches get too long. Regarding fruit: trees from a seed take 5-13 years to bear fruit (if at all), and need another tree for pollination. If you want fruit - buy a composite tree from the nursery!
