Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Bright light - essential for colors! 4-6 hours of light per day. Ideal east or west window. More light = more colors! In low light - the leaves will turn greener and the plant will grow thinner. Avoid direct midday sun - can burn.
💧 Irrigation
Maintain even moisture. Water when the top 25%-50% of the soil is dry. Water until water comes out of the drain. Do not overwater - susceptible to root rot! Reduce watering in winter. Use lukewarm water.
🌱 Earth
Well-drained! Potting soil with added perlite. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Good drainage is critical to prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
Loves heat! Ideal temperature 16-29°C. Very sensitive to cold and drafts! Do not drop below 15°C. Keep away from air conditioners, cold windows and drafts. Sudden temperature changes cause leaves to drop!
💨 Humidity
Likes high humidity! 40-60% humidity is ideal. Mist the leaves regularly, place on a tray of pebbles and water, or use a humidifier. A well-lit kitchen or bathroom are excellent places!
Common problems and solutions
🍂 Leaf fall
The most common problem! Croton does not like changes. Reasons: drafts, temperature changes, moving to a new place, over- or under-watering. Tip: Some leaves falling off after purchase is normal - the plant is adapting!
🌿 Green leaves instead of colorful ones
Lack of light! The bright colors depend on the light. Move to a brighter location. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth. More light = more colors!
🟤 Brown edges
Usually due to low humidity . Spray the leaves, place on a pebble tray, or use a humidifier. Can also be from irregular watering.
🐛 Pests
Red spider mites - common in dry conditions (keep moist!). Scale aphids, mealybugs . Clean leaves regularly with a damp cloth. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil.

🧥 Why "Joseph's Coat"?
The name comes from the biblical story of Joseph - like Joseph's colorful coat, crotons have leaves in an amazing variety of colors! On one leaf you can see green, yellow, orange, red, pink and even purple. The "young" leaves start out green and the colors develop over time.
✂️ Pruning and shaping
When: In the spring, before the growing season begins.
How to: Prune long/thin branches to encourage dense growth. Cut above a leaf node. Remove dry or damaged leaves.
Caution: The plant secretes a white resin (latex) that can irritate and stain skin. Work with gloves!

This is a "stubborn" plant that reacts poorly to changes. After buying or moving - expect leaf loss. This is normal! Let it adapt to a permanent place. Do not move it often. Once it is established - it will be durable and will bloom!
