☀️ Lighting
Bright light - essential for color! 4-6 hours of light per day. East or west window is ideal. More light = more colors! In low light, leaves turn greener and the plant grows leggy. Avoid direct noon sun - it can scorch the leaves.
💧 Watering
Maintain consistent moisture. Water when the top 25%-50% of the soil is dry. Water until water drains from the bottom. Do not overwater - sensitive to root rot! Reduce watering in winter. Use lukewarm water.
🌱 Soil
Well-draining! Houseplant soil mix with added perlite. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Good drainage is critical to prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
Loves warmth! Ideal temperature 16-29°C. Very sensitive to cold and drafts! Do not go below 15°C. Keep away from AC units, cold windows, and drafts. Sudden temperature changes cause leaf drop!
💨 Humidity
Loves high humidity! 40-60% humidity is ideal. Mist leaves regularly, place on a pebble tray with water, or use a humidifier. A bright kitchen or bathroom is an excellent place!

🍂 Leaf Drop
The most common problem! Crotons dislike change. Causes: drafts, temperature changes, moving to a new location, over or under-watering. Tip: Some leaves dropping after purchase is normal - the plant is adjusting!
🌿 Green leaves instead of colorful
Lack of light! Intense colors depend on light. Move to a brighter spot. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth. More light = more color!
🟤 Brown edges
Usually due to low humidity. Mist the leaves, place on a pebble tray, or use a humidifier. Can also be from irregular watering.
🐛 Pests
Spider mites - common in dry conditions (keep humidity up!). Scale, mealybugs. Clean leaves regularly with a damp cloth. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil.

The name comes from the biblical story of Joseph - like Joseph's coat of many colors, the Croton has leaves in a stunning variety of shades! On a single leaf, you can see green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and even purple. "Young" leaves start green, and the colors develop over time.
