A seasonal summer-spring coleus for a shady garden or a bright house

Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) is a tropical plant usually grown as a seasonal shrub. It originates from tropical Asia and Africa, where it grows in the shade of trees in humid rainforests. It belongs to the mint family — and if you crush a leaf, you will smell a mild, herbal scent.

What made it a legend in the gardening world: The infinite variety of colors. There are hundreds of varieties — each with a different leaf pattern. Some are a single intense color, some have contrasting edges, others have stripes, waves, and spots. Every garden planting can look completely different depending on the variety you choose.

In Israel, it grows excellently outdoors during the spring, summer, and autumn. In winter, it can be brought indoors — and it will become a colorful and impressive houseplant.

Two main factors affect color intensity: Light and Pruning.

Light: Gentle morning light with shade during the afternoon hours provides the best colors. In full shade, the colors will dim — and in strong direct sunlight, the leaves will burn and turn yellow. An east-facing window indoors — perfect.

Pruning Flowers: When the Coleus produces small flowering spikes (usually in summer) — cut them off immediately. Flowering "steals" energy from the leaves and fades their color. Pots without flowers = more intense leaves.

Pinching Tips: Pinch the tips of the stems every 2–3 weeks. This encourages the plant to branch out and grow thick and lush, instead of growing tall and looking spindly.

Coleus likes moist soil — not dry and not soggy. Unlike succulent plants, it does not forgive total dryness: the leaves will wilt and drop quickly.

The rule: Water when the top 2cm of soil are dry. In hot summer — sometimes every day or two outdoors. Indoors — once a week. About 200ml for a medium-sized pot.

Sign of lack of water: Leaves that droop and lose rigidity. Sign of overwatering: Yellow leaves, soft stems. In both cases — adjust quickly; the Coleus recovers fast if you react in time.

Soil: Regular potting soil with added perlite for drainage. Coleus likes fertile, well-draining soil — not heavy or clay-like.

Fertilization: Balanced liquid fertilizer, once a month during the growing season (spring–summer). Excess nitrogen will increase green leaves at the expense of color — don't overdo it.

Very easy propagation: Cut a stem 8–10 cm long with 3–4 leaves. Remove the lower leaves and place in a glass of water — roots will grow within 2–3 weeks. Coleus is one of the easiest plants in the world to propagate.

The plant arrives in a plastic grower's pot — and our recommendation is to leave it in it. A grower's pot is designed for exactly that: keeping the plant, providing optimal drainage and aeration of the soil — better than most decorative pots (except terracotta).

So how do you combine it with a beautiful pot? Simple — insert the pot as is into the decorative pot. No need to plant, no need to touch the roots. And if tomorrow you want a pot with a different design — take it out, put it in a new one, done.
