Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun - at least 6-8 hours a day! The key to flowering and fruiting. South or west window. Outside - the sunniest spot in the garden. Not enough sun = no oranges!
💧 Irrigation
Keep soil moist but not wet! Check when the top 2-3 cm is dry. In summer - 1-2 times a week. In winter - reduce and let the soil dry out a bit. Excellent drainage is essential! Rainwater = best!
💨 Humidity
Likes medium-high humidity. Kitchen or bathroom are great places indoors. Spray the leaves occasionally or place on a pebble tray. Humidity encourages flowering!
🌡️ Temperature
15-30°C is ideal. Cool nights (5-10°C less than the day) encourage flowering! Sensitive to frost - not below 0°C! In Israel, most areas are excellent. In cold areas - protect in winter or bring inside.
Common problems and solutions
💛 Yellow leaves
Usually overwatering or poor drainage. Could also be a lack of iron or magnesium - fertilize with citrus fertilizer. Check that the pot drains well.
🌸 Does not bloom / does not bear fruit
Lack of light! Needs at least 6-8 hours of sun. Cool nights also encourage flowering. Fertilize in spring and summer. Young tree? - Needs patience, 2-3 years at least!
🍂 Leaf/flower/fruit drop
Sudden temperature changes or drafts! Move gradually between indoors and outdoors. Irregular watering or low humidity also cause this. Avoid air conditioners and heating.
🐛 Pests
Aphids, mites (tiny spider mites), mealybugs - check regularly. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil. Good ventilation prevents development.

Plant information

The orange tree (Citrus sinensis) is an evergreen fruit tree from the citrus family, also known as the "sweet orange". It originated in Asia (India and China) and arrived in Europe in the 16th century. Today it is one of the most popular fruit trees in the world!

Flowers and Fruit: Small white flowers with a sweet, intoxicating scent - usually in spring. The fruits develop slowly and ripen in 6-12 months. The orange is ripe when it is completely orange and soft to the touch.

Recommended varieties for home growing: Washington orange - most common in Israel, sweet and juicy. Shmuti orange - seedless! Clementine (tangerine) - small and easy to peel, very suitable for a pot.

Size: In the wild it can reach 8-10 meters. Dwarf varieties for pots stay 1.5-3 meters. Perfect for Israel - our climate is ideal for citrus!

💡 Professional tips
Fertilizing: Once every two weeks in spring-summer with a citrus fertilizer rich in nitrogen, potassium and iron! Pruning: Remove dead branches and thin out for ventilation in February. Pinch ends to encourage dense growth. Pollination: Inside - help with a soft brush to transfer pollen between the flowers. Picking: Ripe orange when completely orange - can stay on the tree for months! 🍊
