Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun - at least 6-8 hours a day! Grapefruit does not tolerate shade at all! The sunniest place in the garden or on the balcony. South or west window. Without enough sun = no fruit!
💧 Irrigation
Keep soil moist but not wet! Check when the top 5 cm is dry. In summer - once to twice a week, deep watering. In winter - reduce. Excellent drainage is essential! Rainwater = perfect!
💨 Humidity
Likes medium-high humidity. Citrus trees prefer humid air! Indoors - spray the leaves or place on a tray of pebbles. Good ventilation is important to prevent fungal diseases.
🌡️ Temperature
15-30°C is ideal. Loves heat! Grapefruit needs a lot of heat for sweet fruits. Very sensitive to frost - not below 0°C! In Israel - excellent in the center and south. In cold areas - protect in winter or bring inside.
Common problems and solutions
💛 Yellow leaves
Usually overwatering or poor drainage. Could also be a lack of iron, magnesium or zinc - fertilize with citrus fertilizer. Check that the pot drains well. Old leaves falling off - natural!
🌸 Does not bloom / does not bear fruit
Lack of light! Needs at least 6-8 hours of sun. Also lacks heat - grapefruit needs a lot of heat to fruit. Fertilize in spring and summer. Young tree? - Needs patience, 2-3 years at least!
🍂 Leaf/flower/fruit drop
Sudden temperature changes or drafts! Move gradually between indoors and outdoors. Irregular watering, too low humidity or cold also cause this.
🐛 Pests
Aphids, mites (tiny spider mites), mealybugs, whiteflies - check regularly. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil. Good ventilation prevents development.

Plant information

The grapefruit tree (Citrus × paradisi) is an evergreen fruit tree in the citrus family - a natural hybrid between a pomelo and a sweet orange. It was first discovered in Barbados in the 18th century and has become one of the most popular fruit trees in the world!

Flowers and Fruit: Large, fragrant white flowers - usually in late spring to summer. The fruits are large and juicy, ripen in autumn-winter and can stay on the tree for months - and even become sweet!

Recommended varieties: Ruby Red - sweet red-pink flesh! Star Ruby - deep red and extremely sweet. Rio Red - almost seedless. Oroblanco - yellowish-white with a delicate flavor.

Size: In the wild it can reach 8-10 meters. Dwarf varieties for pots remain 2-4 meters. Ideal for Israel - loves heat and sun, and our climate is perfect!

💡 Professional tips
Fertilizing: Every two weeks in spring-summer with citrus fertilizer! Stop in September. Pruning: Remove dead and sucker branches (below the mount) in February-March. Heat = sweetness: The hotter - the sweeter the fruit! Picking: The fruit can stay on the tree for months and sweeten. Beware of thorns: Some varieties have sharp thorns on the branches! 🍊
