Growing conditions

☀️ Lighting

Bright, indirect light - ideal! Like on the tropical rainforest floor. Can tolerate medium light but will grow more slowly. Not in direct sun! The thin leaves burn easily. A north or east window is excellent.

💧 Irrigation

Water when the top 2-3 cm is dry. Prefers dryness over over-wetness! Over-watering = the most common mistake. In winter, reduce significantly. If the leaves are limp - thirsty! If they turn yellow - too much water.

💨 Humidity

Likes high humidity (50-60%) but also does well with normal humidity. Brown edges = humidity too low. Solutions: Spray, pebble tray, humidifier, or place in the bathroom.

🌡️ Temperature

18-27°C ideal - loves heat! Not below 15°C! Cold stops growth and damages leaves. Keep away from air conditioners and cold windows in winter. Normal room temperature is fine.

Common problems and solutions

💛 Yellow leaves

Almost always overwatering! Check that the soil dries out between waterings. Could also be a lack of light. Move closer to a window and reduce watering.

🟤 Dry brown ends

Humidity too low or direct sun! Increase humidity in the air, move out of the sun. The thin leaves are especially sensitive to dryness and burns.

🥀 Loose leaves

Thirst! The monstera shows immediately when it needs water. Water and within hours it will recover. If the soil is wet and the leaves are limp - root rot from overwatering.

🐌 Slow growth

Lack of light or need to change pot! If the roots are coming out of the drainage - time to move to a larger pot. Lack of fertilizer can also slow growth.

🐒 The Monkey Mask

Plant information

Monstera adansonii is also known as the "Monkey Mask" or "Swiss Cheese Vine." The charming little cousin of the famous Monstera deliciosa. It originates from the rainforests of Central and South America.

Why the holes? The holes in the leaves are called "fenestrations" and evolved to capture more light on the tropical forest floor. The bigger the leaves, the more holes they have!

How it grows: In nature, it climbs trees using aerial roots. At home, it can climb a moss column or spill out of a hanging pot - both are spectacular!

Size: Can reach up to 3 meters in length! The leaves are smaller and more delicate than the regular monstera - up to 20 cm. Grows quickly and puts out a new leaf every few weeks in the summer.

💡 Professional tips

Moss column: Provide a moss or coconut column for climbing - the aerial roots will hold on to it and you will get bigger leaves! Easy propagation: Cut below the joint with a leaf, put in water - roots within weeks! Leaf cleaning: Gently wipe off dust - helps the plant absorb light. Fertilization: Once a month in spring-summer with a balanced fertilizer. 🐒
