Plant information
Liriope (Liriope muscari), also known as "monkey grass" or "grass lily", is an evergreen perennial plant in the asparagus family. It is native to East Asia - China, Japan, and Taiwan.
The plant forms dense clumps of long, narrow leaves that resemble ornamental grass, and in late summer produces clusters of purple-blue flowers reminiscent of hyacinths. After flowering, shiny black berries develop that persist until winter.
Its scientific name comes from a Greek nymph named Liriope, who was the mother of Narcissus. The plant reaches a height of 30-45 cm and a similar width, and is perfect as a border plant, ground cover, or even as a substitute for grass in shady areas.
