Growing conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun to partial shade. Also performs well in near-full shade, but flowering will be less impressive. Brighter light is preferred for variegated varieties.
💧 Irrigation
In the first year - regular watering to maintain moisture. Once established - very drought tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Excess water may cause root rot.
🌱 Earth
Prefers well-drained soil with an acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Tolerates a wide range of soil types including clay and sand. Addition of organic matter improves growth.
🌡️ Temperature
Very resistant to changing temperatures (hardiness zones 5-10). Tolerates cold down to minus 30 degrees Celsius. In Israel, suitable for all regions of the country.
Common problems and solutions
🍂 Brown leaves at the edges
Usually indicates too dry air or lack of watering. Watering should be increased during hot periods and a more humid environment should be created.
🌸 Poor flowering
The plant needs at least part of the day in sun to bloom well. If it is growing in deep shade, consider moving it to a brighter location.
💦 Root rot
Caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering and make sure the soil drains well.
🐛 Aphids
Sticky leaves indicate aphids. Can be treated with neem oil or a diluted phosphate soap spray.

Plant information

Liriope (Liriope muscari), also known as "monkey grass" or "grass lily", is an evergreen perennial plant in the asparagus family. It is native to East Asia - China, Japan, and Taiwan.

The plant forms dense clumps of long, narrow leaves that resemble ornamental grass, and in late summer produces clusters of purple-blue flowers reminiscent of hyacinths. After flowering, shiny black berries develop that persist until winter.

Its scientific name comes from a Greek nymph named Liriope, who was the mother of Narcissus. The plant reaches a height of 30-45 cm and a similar width, and is perfect as a border plant, ground cover, or even as a substitute for grass in shady areas.

💡 Pro tip
In late winter or early spring, prune off all the old foliage close to the ground - this will encourage fresh new growth. After a few years, when the clumps become dense, divide them and replant for more plants!
