📖 About the plant — What’s the story? ▼

Euphorbia trigona 'Rubra' is a red variety of the African Milk Tree — a succulent from Central Africa (Angola, Congo, Gabon). It looks like a cactus — a rigid stem, thorns, impressive height — but it is not a cactus: it has small teardrop-shaped leaves along the stem, and belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family.

What makes the 'Rubra' unique: the stem, thorns, and leaves are all in a deep burgundy-red hue — especially in strong light. The plant can reach a height of 1.5–2 meters indoors and creates an architectural and dramatic look hard to find in other houseplants.

Growth rate: bursts of rapid growth alternate with rest periods. In a good year — up to 30 cm of growth. Over time, a woody base "trunk" develops, giving the plant a tree-like appearance.

💧 Watering — Less is more ▼

The Trigona 'Rubra' stores water in its thick stems — just like a cactus. The biggest danger is overwatering: root rot is the main reason for this plant's demise.

The rule: Water only when the soil is completely dry — about 100 ml every two weeks in summer, and once a month in winter. When in doubt — don't water.

Sign of underwatering: slight wrinkles on the stem — that is the time to water. Sign of overwatering: yellowing and dropping leaves, stem soft to the touch.

🔴 How to keep the red color? ▼

The intensity of the burgundy-red color depends directly on the amount of light the plant receives. In bright light — the plant will be deep red. In low light — the stem will turn greener.

Best placement: near an east-facing window with morning sun, or a south/west-facing window with afternoon sun. The plant can stand in direct sun — but should be acclimated gradually and avoid harsh summer midday sun that will burn it.

Note: new growth always comes out greener and darkens to red over time — this is completely normal and not a sign of a problem.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: mix for cacti and succulents — draining and airy. You can mix potting soil with coarse sand and perlite. Do not plant in heavy soil that retains moisture.

Fertilizing: liquid fertilizer for cacti, only once a month during the growing season (spring–summer). Do not fertilize in winter. The plant is not hungry for fertilizer — less is more.

Repotting: every 2–3 years, move up only by 2 cm. A terracotta pot is recommended — it allows the soil to dry out quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it a cactus or not? +
It is not a cactus — even though it looks like one. Cacti belong to the Cactaceae family, and the Euphorbia has nothing to do with them. The simple difference: the Euphorbia has real small leaves along the stem (cacti do not), and when the stem is cut, white sap comes out (cacti do not). This is a succulent from the Euphorbiaceae family — a huge family with over 2,000 species.
Is the plant suitable for beginners? +
Yes — it is one of the most forgiving plants. It survives neglect, low humidity, and changing light conditions. The only thing to remember is not to overwater.
The new stem came out green — is this normal? +
Totally normal. New growth of the Trigona 'Rubra' always comes out greener and darkens to burgundy-red over time and with exposure to light. This is part of the natural process and is not a sign of a problem.
Does the plant come in a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic grower's pot — and our recommendation is to keep it in its pot. A grower's pot is designed precisely for that: maintaining the plant, drainage, and optimal aeration of the soil — much better than most decorative pots (except for terracotta).

So how do you pair it with a beautiful planter? Simple — place the pot as-is inside the planter. No need to plant, no need to touch the roots. And if tomorrow you want a planter with a different design — take it out, put it in the new one, done.

We have a large selection of decorative planters and pots in the shop — you can add them to your order.
