Why "Dragon Tree"? The name comes from an ancient legend — in Greek, Dracaena means "female dragon." The plant produces a dark red resin called "dragon's blood" when the stem is cut. The Magenta variety features dark green leaves with intense burgundy-magenta edges — the more light it gets, the more intense the color.
📖 About the plant — What makes it a design icon? ▼

Dracaena marginata is native to Madagascar, where it grows as a tree up to 6 meters tall. Indoors, it reaches a height of 1.5–2.5 meters, creating a unique woody stem with a canopy of narrow, sharp leaves — a look reminiscent of a tropical palm.

The Magenta variety is the darkest version of the dracaena — the leaves are dark green, almost black, with striking burgundy-magenta edges. The more light it gets, the more intense the colored edges will be.

💧 Watering — Less is more ▼

The dracaena is drought-tolerant, storing water in its stem and roots. Overwatering is the biggest danger: root rot is the primary cause of death for indoor dracaenas.

The rule: Water only when the soil is completely dry — about 150ml every two weeks in summer, and once a month in winter.

Important tip: Dracaena is sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water — the leaf tips will start to turn black. It is recommended to use rainwater or let tap water sit in an open container overnight before watering.

🌸 How to maintain the Magenta color? ▼

The intensity of the burgundy-magenta color depends directly on the amount of light. In good light — the color is intense and striking. In low light — the leaves will be greener and weaker.

The ideal location: An eastern window with gentle morning light, or a western/southern window with a sheer curtain. Strong direct midday sun will burn the leaves.

Rotate the plant a quarter turn once a month for symmetrical growth on all sides.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: Well-draining mix — potting soil with perlite. Dracaena doesn't like heavy soil that retains moisture. Do not add gravel to the bottom for drainage; use a pot with a drain hole and suitable potting mix.

Fertilizing: Balanced liquid fertilizer, once a month only during the growing season (spring–summer), at half the recommended dosage. Dracaena is sensitive to salt accumulation — excess fertilizer will cause leaf tips to turn black. Do not fertilize in winter.

Repotting: Every 3–4 years — the dracaena grows slowly and is in no rush to fill a pot. Increase pot size by only 2 cm. If the plant is too tall — you can trim the stem to the desired height, and the plant will sprout new branches from the cut point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this plant suitable for beginners? +
Absolutely — the Dracaena marginata is one of the most forgiving houseplants. It survives neglect, is drought-tolerant, and adapts to a wide range of lighting conditions. The only thing to remember: do not overwater. Anyone who remembers this rule will succeed.
The leaf tips turned brown — what happened? +
The most common cause is fluoride and chlorine from tap water accumulating in the soil. Solution: Use rainwater or let tap water sit in an open container overnight. Other factors: Overwatering, over-fertilizing, or air that is too dry.
The bottom leaves are falling off — is that normal? +
Yes — it is completely normal and even desirable. As the dracaena grows, the lower leaves naturally fall off to direct energy to new growth at the canopy. This is how the elegant woody stem that characterizes the plant develops.
Does the plant come in a pot? +

The plant comes in a grower's plastic pot — and our recommendation is to leave it there. A grower's pot is designed exactly for that: maintaining the plant, ensuring drainage and optimal soil aeration — much better than most decorative pots (with the exception of terracotta).

So, how to combine it with a beautiful decorative pot? Simply — insert the grower's pot as is into the decorative pot. No need to plant, no need to touch the roots. And if tomorrow you want a pot in a different style — just take it out, put it in a new pot, done.

We have a large selection of decorative pots and planters in the store — you can add them to your order.
