Perennial Diets for the Garden

The Dietes blooms most beautifully in full sun, but also grows well in partial shade. It is suitable along paths, in flower beds, as a garden border — and also in a large pot on a bright balcony.

Group planting: It looks best in groups of 3–5 plants, spaced 50–60 cm apart — creating a uniform green surface with plenty of flowering stems. Regarding our sizes: the 15 cm pot is suitable for an economical start, while the 24/30 cm pots provide an immediate presence in the garden.

In a pot: A 10-liter or larger container with drainage holes. You can find quality drained potting mix in the potting mix category, and other complementary garden plants in the garden plants category.

In the first year (until established): Water regularly and deeply; in summer, about once or twice a week.

After establishment: In winter, rainfall is sufficient. In summer, deep watering once every week or two will maintain beautiful foliage and full blooms — but even if you forget, it will handle it.

What it doesn't like: standing water. In drained soil or a pot with drainage — there are no issues.

Grows in almost any soil, including relatively heavy soil — as long as there is decent drainage. No special preparation needed.

Fertilization: One application of compost or slow-release fertilizer in spring — and that is enough for the whole year. A variety of suitable fertilizers can be found in the fertilizer category.

Do not prune the green flower stalks! With Dietes, the same stalk produces new flowers again and again, even in subsequent seasons. Only cut stems that have dried out completely.

Besides that — remove dry leaves from the base as they accumulate, to maintain a tidy appearance. That is all the pruning needed.

Division: After 3–4 years, if the clump becomes dense, you can divide it with a spade and replant — that's how you get new plants for free.

🌸 Not blooming: Almost always a lack of sun — move to a brighter spot. A young plant also simply needs time to establish.

🍂 Brown leaf tips: Extreme dryness or strong wind. Water a bit more in the peak of summer.

🐌 Snails: Holes in leaves and slime trails — remove manually or scatter snail bait around the plant.

🌱 The clump is "spreading out": Natural in a mature plant. If it bothers you — divide and replant.

Each individual flower opens for one to three days, but the plant continues to produce new flowers from the same stalks again and again — which is why it is important not to prune a green flower stalk. It is called "Fortnight Lily" because the blooming waves return roughly every two weeks.

A height of 60–120 cm, depending on conditions. The plant expands over the years into a full and stable clump — therefore, in group planting, maintain a spacing of 50–60 cm between plants.

Yes — it is one of the most resistant plants available: heat, drought, winds, and also light frost of down to about minus 5 degrees Celsius. Suitable for most regions in the country, including areas with slight salinity in the soil.

An established Dietes plant in the pot size you chose: 15 cm diameter (4 liters), 24 cm diameter (10 liters), or 30 cm diameter (25 liters) — the larger the pot, the more developed the plant and the more immediate the presence.
