Bright indirect light — eastern or northern window. No direct sun — it will burn the leaves and fade the cross
💧
Watering
When the top 2 cm of soil are dry — water from the base, not on the leaves. Consistent humidity
🌡️

Home and shaded balcony — suitable for all skill levels. An impressive foliage plant for a corner of the house

Loves high humidity — a humidifier will help. Do not mist leaves directly — prevents mold
🌿
What is the brown-red pattern? Each leaf features a striking chocolate-brown pattern in its center — just like the historical German Iron Cross. Originally from southern China and northern Vietnam, it grows in the shade of tropical forests. It is a rhizomatous begonia, growing from underground stems that store water and minerals. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit — international recognition for an excellent garden plant.
📖 About the plant — what makes it unique? ▼

Begonia masoniana is a rhizomatous begonia introduced to horticulture in 1955, and since then it has become one of the most recognizable foliage plants in the world. It originates from southern China and northern Vietnam.

What makes it special: Each large, rough, and rounded leaf bears a prominent, dark chocolate-brown pattern — a pattern reminiscent of the medieval Iron Cross. The leaf surface is covered in small, blister-like bumps and tiny hairs — a texture unlike any other in the plant world.

The plant grows to a height of up to 30–40 cm — compact and perfect for a windowsill, desk, or shelf. The flowers are small and white — but the leaves are the real stars.

💧 Watering — the most important rule ▼

Do not water the leaves! Begonia masoniana is very sensitive to mold and fungal diseases when water touches the leaves. Always water from the base — place the pot in a saucer of water for 15–20 minutes, then remove it.

When to water: When the top 2 cm of soil are dry. The rhizomes store water — do not dry it out completely, but don't keep it constantly soggy either.

Signs: Curling leaves that lose firmness = thirst. Yellow and mushy leaves = overwatering. Leaves with round brown spots = water touched the leaf.

🌿 How to maintain the bold pattern? ▼

The intensity of the chocolate-brown pattern depends primarily on light. In bright indirect light, the pattern is bold, dark, and impressive. In full shade, the pattern becomes dull and loses intensity.

Also, trimming old and yellowed leaves encourages the plant to produce new, larger leaves with an even bolder cross.

Tip: If the begonia blooms, feel free to prune the flowers. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, and by removing them, the plant directs energy toward growing larger, more beautiful leaves.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: A light, well-draining mix — potting soil with perlite. We also recommend adding vermiculite to maintain stable moisture. Slightly acidic pH (6.0–6.5).

Shallow pot: The begonia is rhizomatous — it grows outward rather than downward. Choose a shallow and wide pot rather than a deep one. A deep pot retains too much moisture and risks rot.

Fertilizing: Use a diluted liquid fertilizer once every month or two during the growing season (spring–summer). Do not fertilize in winter when the plant is resting.

Repotting: Every year or two, move up 2 cm in size. If you see leaves dropping in winter, don't worry. The begonia enters a partial dormancy and will return in the spring.

FAQ
Is this plant suitable for beginners? +
Yes — with one rule to remember: do not water the leaves. Anyone who waters from the base, provides bright indirect light, and moderate humidity will do just fine. Begonia masoniana is one of the easiest foliage begonias to grow.
Brown spots on the leaves — what happened? +
Round brown spots = water touched the leaf (sunlight magnified through a water droplet). Brown edges = humidity is too low. Black and soft spots = mold from watering over the leaves. In all cases, switch to watering from the base only.
Leaves falling off in winter — is this normal? +
Yes — Begonia masoniana enters partial dormancy in the winter. Leaves may drop and the plant might look "lazy." Continue to care for it — less water, no fertilizer — and it will return to lush growth in the spring.
Does the plant come with a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic grower pot — and our recommendation is to keep it in it. A grower pot provides optimal drainage and aeration. Important: Begonia masoniana loves a shallow and wide pot — if you transplant it, choose a container that isn't too deep.

We have a large selection of decorative pots and containers in our shop — you can add them to your order.
