Growing Conditions
☀️ Lighting
Full sun is a must! At least 6 hours per day. Without enough sun, it won't bloom! The more sun, the more spectacular the flowering. Will not tolerate shade.
💧 Watering
Loves dryness! Deep watering every 3-4 weeks is better than frequent, shallow waterings. Overwatering = fungal diseases! More drought = more flowers. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant.
🌱 Soil
Excellent drainage is essential! Prefers sandy or gravelly soil, slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.0). Cannot stand wet soil! Tolerates poor soil.
🌡️ Temperature
Loves heat! Grows excellently at 20-35°C. Frost sensitive - damaged by temperatures below 0°C. Mature plants tolerate light frost for short periods. Perfect for the Israeli climate!
Common Problems and Solutions
🌸 Not blooming
Most common reason: Lack of sun! Bougainvillea must have full sun. Overwatering also causes leafy growth instead of flowers. Less water = more flowers!
🍂 Leaf drop
Could be water stress (too much or too little), cold, or moving to a new location. Bougainvillea dislikes changes! In colder areas, it may drop leaves in winter, which is natural.
🍃 Lots of leaves, few flowers
Too much water or fertilizer! "Starving" it a bit—less water and fertilizer—will encourage blooming. Fertilizer with high nitrogen encourages leaves, not flowers.
🐛 Pests
Aphids, mites, thrips—check regularly. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil. Usually, a healthy plant is resistant to pests.

About the Plant
Bougainvillea is a spectacular tropical climber/shrub from the Nyctaginaceae family, native to South America.
The Secret: The colorful "flowers" are actually modified leaves (bracts)! The true flowers are small and white in the center. Bract colors: pink, magenta, purple, orange, red, white, and even yellow!
Versatility: Can be grown as a climber on a fence/pergola/wall, as a shrub, a small tree, or even in a pot! Grows fast—up to one meter per year! In hot climates, it blooms almost year-round.
Size: Can reach 4-12 meters as a climber. Note: It has thorns on the branches—be careful when pruning! The branches are relatively fragile—protect from strong wind.
💡 Professional Tips
Pruning: At the end of winter/beginning of spring—to encourage flowering on new growth. You can prune again after flowering to encourage another wave! The Golden Rule: Less water and fertilizer = more flowers! Training: Tie young branches to support with soft ties.
