☀️ Lighting
Full sun - a must! At least 6 hours a day. Without enough sun - it will not bloom! The more sun - the more spectacular the blooms. It will not tolerate shade.
💧 Irrigation
Loves dryness! Deep watering every 3-4 weeks is better than frequent, shallow watering. Overwatering = fungal diseases! More dryness = more flowering. Once established - very drought tolerant.
🌱 Earth
Excellent drainage is essential! Prefers sandy or gravelly soil, slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.0). Does not tolerate wet soil! Tolerates poor soil.
🌡️ Temperature
Loves heat! Grows excellently at 20-35°C. Sensitive to frost - damaged by temperatures below 0°C. Mature plants tolerate light frost for a short time. Perfect for the Israeli climate!
Common problems and solutions
🌸 Not blooming
The most common reason: lack of sun! Bougainvillea needs full sun. Overwatering also causes green growth instead of blooms. Less water = more flowers!
🍂 Leaf fall
Could be water pressure (too much or too little), cold, or moving to a new location. Bougainvillea doesn't like change! In cold areas - may drop in winter and this is natural.
🍃 Lots of leaves, few flowers
Too much water or fertilizer! Starve it a little - less water and fertilizer will encourage flowering. High nitrogen fertilizer encourages leaves, not flowers.
🐛 Pests
Aphids, mites, thrips - check regularly. Treat with potassium soap or neem oil. Generally a healthy plant is resistant to pests.

Bougainvillea is a spectacular tropical climber/shrub from the nectarine family, native to South America. It is also called "Bakufa" or "Bougainville" in Hebrew.
The secret: The colorful "flowers" are actually special leaves (stipules)! The real flowers are small and white in the center. The colors of the stipules: pink, magenta, purple, orange, red, white and even yellow!
Flexibility: Can be grown as a climber on a fence/pergola/wall, as a shrub, as a small tree, or even in a pot! Grows quickly - up to a meter per year! In warm climates, blooms almost all year round.
Size: Can reach 4-12 meters as a climber. Note: It has thorns on the branches - be careful when pruning! The branches are relatively fragile - protect from strong winds.
💡 Professional tips
Pruning: Late winter/early spring - encourage flowering on new growth. Can be pruned again after flowering to encourage another wave! Golden rule: less water and fertilizer = more flowers! Training: Tie young branches to support with soft twine. Recommended varieties: Barbara Karst (magenta), California Gold (yellow), Imperial Delight (pink-white). 🌺
