Detailed information about the plant

About Indian alder

Indian alder (Terminalia catappa) is an impressive tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and widespread in tropical regions around the world. The tree is known for its large, beautiful leaves that turn red-orange before falling, giving it a dramatic and spectacular appearance.

The tree produces edible fruits that resemble almonds (hence its name), and its leaves are used in aquaristics to improve water quality for tropical fish.

In Israel, it is suitable for growing in a garden or in a large container, and can reach an impressive height of 10-15 meters under optimal conditions.

Growing conditions

☀️ Lighting
Full sun - at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Can also tolerate partial shade but will flower less.
💧 Irrigation
Regular watering in summer, let the soil dry out partially between waterings. In winter - reduce significantly. Very resistant to salinity and can be watered with tap water.
🌱 Soil
Adapts to all types of soil, including sandy soil and saline soil. Prefers well-drained soil.
🌡️ Temperature
Tropical plant - loves heat. Ideal temperature 20-35°C. Sensitive to cold - must be protected from frost.

Common problems and solutions

🍂 Leaves fall in winter
It's completely natural! Indian alder is a semi-deciduous tree - in winter or during dry periods it will shed some of its leaves. No need to worry.
🐛 Spots on the leaves
It could be a fungus or a pest. Remove infected leaves and spray with an appropriate product if the problem spreads.
🥶 Cold damage
Black or soft leaves indicate frost damage. Prune off the damaged parts and move them to a sheltered location for the winter.

💡 Pro tip
The fallen leaves of Indian alder are "gold" for aquarium owners! They release tannins that are beneficial to tropical fish, lower pH, and prevent fungus. Save the dried leaves and sell or give them to friends with aquariums.
