"Shingle Plant". In nature, the Dubia climbs tree trunks and its leaves lie flat like roof shingles — each leaf overlapping the one before it. As the plant climbs higher and receives more light — the leaves grow larger, darken, and begin to develop fenestrations, just like Monstera Deliciosa. The coco coir pole mimics the natural tree trunk and allows the plant to reach its full potential.
📖 About the plant — What makes it rare? ▼

Monstera Dubia is one of the rarest Monsteras on the plant market. It originates from the rainforests of Central and South America, where it climbs tree trunks on the forest floor — in filtered shade and high humidity.

The nickname "Shingle Plant" is derived from its unique growth habit: each leaf sticks flat to the surface and partially covers the leaf beneath it — like roof shingles. This is a mechanism that allows it to capture maximum filtered light in its forest home.

Over time, with proper climbing, the plant will produce larger leaves and begin to develop fenestrations. The maturation journey of the Dubia is one of the most fascinating in the plant world.

🧱 The coco coir pole — How to care for it? ▼

The coco coir pole is the heart of the Dubia's growth — it mimics the natural tree trunk and allows the plant's aerial roots to grip and absorb moisture.

Weekly misting: Mist the coco coir pole once a week with room temperature water. This encourages the plant to send aerial roots along the pole and grip it — which accelerates growth and helps the leaves lie flat.

Don't move it: Once the plant has gripped the pole — do not move it. Moving it will detach the aerial roots and delay growth.

💧 Watering and humidity — Two critical needs ▼

Watering: When 50% of the soil is dry — that's the time. Approx. 150ml once a week in summer, less in winter. The Dubia is sensitive to root rot — do not let it sit in water.

Humidity — a must: The Dubia requires humidity of at least 50–60%. In low humidity, leaf edges will turn black, the silver veins will dull, and the plant will grow very slowly. A humidifier next to the plant is the most worthwhile investment for it.

Tip: Also spray the leaf surfaces once a week — it cleans off dust, allows the plant to breathe, and preserves the silver sheen of the veins.

🌱 Soil, fertilizer, and repotting ▼

Soil: A well-draining, airy mix for aroids — potting soil with perlite and tree bark. The soil must drain quickly and not hold moisture for long.

Fertilizing: A balanced liquid fertilizer, once a month during the growing season (spring–summer), at half the recommended dose. Do not fertilize in winter and not for the first month after the plant arrives home.

Repotting: Every 1–2 years, increase by only 2 cm. Important: if the plant is already gripping the coco coir pole — do not dismantle it. Prefer adding a larger pot around the existing root ball.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the plant suitable for beginners? +
Not really — the Dubia requires attention to two critical things: high humidity and weekly misting of the coco coir pole. Someone with basic experience with aroids who is willing to invest in a humidifier will succeed greatly. Not suitable for those looking for a "set and forget" plant.
Why aren't the leaves lying flat against the coco coir pole? +
The Dubia lies flat only when the pole is moist and aerial roots can grip it. If the pole is dry — the plant will not grip it and leaves will grow outward. The solution: mist the coco coir pole every week and keep it moist at all times.
The silver veins have faded — what happened? +
Two common factors: too little light or low humidity. Move to a brighter window (not direct sun) and add a humidifier. Gently wiping the leaves once a week also helps restore the silver sheen.
Does the plant come in a pot? +

The plant arrives in a plastic grower's pot with a coco coir pole — do not transfer it to another vessel. The coco coir pole is an integral part of the Dubia's growth and cannot be separated. You can, of course, place the entire pot inside a larger decorative pot for aesthetics.

We have a large selection of decorative pots and planters in the store — you can add them to your order.
