What makes it so special? Three details no other plant has: shimmering silver spots on deep olive green, dark red leaf undersides that reveal themselves with every movement, and segmented stems like bamboo. Gardener’s World on the BBC claims these spots inspired the designer Louboutin to paint the soles of his shoes red. And in spring and summer — clusters of pinkish-white flowers that cascade gracefully from the stems.

💧 Watering — not too dry, not too wet ▼

The Polka Dot Begonia requires a delicate balance: do not dry out completely (the stems will break) and do not sit in water (root rot). When about 80% of the soil is dry — time to water.

Summer: every 4–5 days. Winter: every 10–14 days. Always water directly into the soil — not on the leaves.

Drought sign: stems lose firmness, leaves curl. Overwatering sign: yellow leaves, soft stems.

✂️ Pruning — the secret to a dense and full plant ▼

The long stems tend to grow upward and develop leaves only at the top. Light pruning of the stem tips encourages branching and a denser, richer plant.

When to prune: mid-spring and end of the growing season. The pruned stem cuttings — can be placed in water for easy propagation.

Propagation: a stem with 2 nodes in water — roots in 2–4 weeks. One of the easiest Begonias to propagate.

🌱 Soil, Fertilizing, and Repotting ▼

Soil: light, airy, and well-draining — houseplant soil with 20% perlite. Not heavy soil.

Fertilizing: balanced liquid fertilizer once every two months during the growing season, at half-strength. Do not fertilize in winter.

Repotting: once a year — even into the same pot — just to refresh the soil. Begonia roots consume all nutrients quickly. Always use a pot with drainage.

The silver spots have faded — what's happening? +

Two main factors: excessive direct sunlight that bleaches the silver, or lack of light that makes the leaves dull. Add a curtain if there is direct sun, or move to a brighter window. New leaves that emerge will have full spots.

Does the plant come in a pot? +
