Growing Conditions

☀️ Lighting

Full sun - best! At least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the most vibrant foliage colors. Tolerates partial shade, but leaves will be less colorful and more green. Full sun = spectacular fall colors!

💧 Watering

Drought tolerant! Once established - needs very little water. Water deeply and allow soil to dry between waterings. Sensitive to overwatering! Good drainage is essential. In winter - almost no watering required.

🌱 Soil

Not fussy! Adapts to most soil types - sandy, loamy, rocky, even poor soil. The important thing: Excellent drainage! Cannot stand wet or waterlogged soil. Neutral to slightly acidic pH.

🌡️ Temperature

Highly cold tolerant! Withstands temperatures down to -20°C and even lower. Deciduous - drops leaves in winter. Resilient to heat and drought in summer. Perfect for the Israeli climate! Suitable for all parts of the country.

Common Problems and Solutions

💨 No "smoke" / sparse flowering

Common causes: Excessive pruning! Smoke bush blooms on year-old branches or older. Over-pruning removes flower buds. Lack of sun - requires full sun for good flowering.

💛 Green leaves instead of colorful

Lack of sun! Purple and bluish varieties need full sun for the best color. In shade, the leaves become greener. Move to a sunnier location.

🍂 Drying / wilting

Could be Verticillium - a fungal soil disease causing wilting and drying. Difficult to treat - remove affected plants and do not replant smoke bush in the same spot.

💦 Root rot

Overwatering or poor drainage! Smoke bush does not like wet soil. Improve drainage, reduce watering. Plant in a raised area if soil is heavy.

The name comes from its unique flower plumes! Most flowers don't develop into fruit but instead elongate into feathery pink-purple hairs that create the appearance of fluffy smoke clouds around the plant. An especially magical effect in summer! The "Glauca" cultivar features bluish-green leaves with a waxy coating.

✂️ Pruning - Two options

Option 1 - Light pruning: Only for shaping and removing dead branches. You will get abundant flowering ("smoke")!

Option 2 - Hard pruning: At the end of winter, prune all branches to 15-30 cm from the ground. You will get larger and more colorful leaves, but no flowering that year.

Compromise: Prune hard every other year - this way you get both beautiful leaves and flowering!
