Full sun - best! At least 6 hours of direct sun per day for the most beautiful foliage colors. Tolerates partial shade, but leaves will be less colorful and greener. Full sun = spectacular fall colors!
๐ง Irrigation
Drought tolerant! Once established - needs very little water. Water deeply and let the soil dry out between waterings. Sensitive to overwatering! Good drainage is essential. In winter - hardly any watering is needed.
๐ฑ Earth
Not picky! Adapts to most soil types - sandy, loamy, rocky, even poor. The important thing: excellent drainage! Does not tolerate wet or flooded soil. Neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Very cold-resistant! Tolerates temperatures down to -20ยฐC and even more. Deciduous - sheds leaves in winter. Resistant to heat and drought in summer. Perfect for the Israeli climate! Suitable for all regions of the country.
Common problems and solutions
๐จ No "smoke" / little bloom
Common causes: Excessive pruning! Og blooms on branches that are a year or older. Pruning too hard removes flower buds. Lack of sun - needs full sun for good flowering.
๐ Green leaves instead of colorful ones
Lack of sun! Purple and blue varieties need full sun for best color. In shade - leaves turn greener. Move to a sunnier location.
๐ Dehydration / wilting
May have verticillium wilt - a fungal disease in the soil that causes wilting and drying. Difficult to treat - an infected plant should be removed and not planted in the same spot again.
๐ฆ Root rot
Overwatering or poor drainage! Og does not tolerate wet soil. Improve drainage, reduce watering. Plant in an elevated location if the soil is heavy.

๐จ Why "the smoke bush"?
The name comes from the unique flower changes! Most of the flowers do not develop into fruit, but rather elongate into pink-purple feathery hairs that create the appearance of soft clouds of smoke around the plant. A particularly magical effect in summer! The "Glauca" variety is characterized by bluish-green leaves with a waxy coating.
โ๏ธ Pruning - two options
Option 1 - Light pruning: just for shaping and removing dry branches. You will get abundant flowering ("smoke")!
Option 2 - Heavy pruning: At the end of winter, prune all branches to 15-30 cm from the ground. You will get larger and more colorful leaves, but no blooms that year.
Compromise: Prune heavily every other year - that way you get both beautiful leaves and blooms!
