Growing Conditions
☀️ Lighting
Strawberries love full sun - at least 6-8 hours a day. In Israel: during summer, partial shade at noon is preferred to prevent leaf burn. In winter - full sun position. The more light - the sweeter the fruit!
💧 Watering
Strawberries need constant moisture! Water 1-2 times a week, more on hot days. Especially important during flowering and fruit ripening. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged - good drainage is essential!
🌱 Soil
Soil rich in organic matter, well-draining, with a pH of 5.5-6.8. It is recommended to add compost before planting. Straw mulch around the plants keeps moisture in, suppresses weeds, and protects fruit from dirt.
🌡️ Temperature
Ideal temperature for flowering and fruit: 15-27°C. In Israel, the ideal growing season is autumn-winter-spring. In the hot summer (above 30°C) the plant struggles to yield fruit - provide shade and increase watering.
Common Problems & Solutions
💦 Root and Fruit Rot
Caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Solution: Ensure excellent drainage, lift fruits off the soil with straw mulch, avoid watering leaves and fruit.
🦠 Powdery Mildew
White powder on leaves. Caused by high humidity and poor ventilation. Solution: Improve air circulation, remove infected leaves, spray with appropriate treatments.
🐌 Snails and Slugs
They love to eat the fruit! Solution: Beer traps, eco-friendly pest control pellets, or lifting fruits from the soil with straw mulch.
☀️ Summer Leaf Burn
Brown and dry leaf edges from excessive heat. Solution: Provide 50-65% shade during noon hours, increase watering, use straw mulch to cool the soil.

Plant Information

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is a perennial plant of the Rose family. It is actually an 18th-century hybrid between wild strawberries from Chile and North America. The plant lives for 5-6 years and produces the sweetest fruit in its 2nd and 3rd years.

There are three main types: June-bearing - produce one large harvest in the spring. Everbearing - produce 2-3 harvests a year. Day-neutral - produce as long as temperatures are comfortable (15-27°C).

Strawberries produce "runners" - long stems at the ends of which new seedlings develop. This is the easiest way to propagate the plant! Simply place the seedling on soil, wait for it to root, and cut it from the mother plant.

💡 Professional Tip for Israel
In Israel, the best time to plant strawberries is September-October! The plants will establish themselves during winter and yield sweet fruit from January to May. Spring planting will result in less fruit because the hot summer prevents flowering. In summer - protect the plants in the shade and do not expect a harvest. Straw mulch around the plants keeps them cool and the fruit clean 🍓
