A powerful blessing for every field!
According to Feng Shui, Lucky Bamboo represents all 5 elements: Wood (the plant itself), Water (in the container), Earth (the stones), Metal (glassware or coin), Fire (red ribbon).
๐ค๏ธ Growing conditions - the key to success
โ๏ธ Light
Ideal type of light: diffused, indirect, bright but not direct light.
Tolerance: Lucky Bamboo does well in low light and even with artificial lighting alone!
Healthy growth, bright green color
Burns the leaves! Avoid
๐ก Tip: Perfect spot - near a north window or a few meters from a bright window. Grows great even under fluorescent light in the office!
๐ง Water and irrigation
Growing in water (most common):
- Maintain a water level that covers the roots (5-10 cm)
- Change the water every 2-4 weeks.
- Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater.
- If using tap water - let stand for 24 hours before using.
Growing in the ground:
- Water when 50% of the soil is dry.
- Do not leave standing water at the bottom.
- Good drainage is critical!
Lucky Bamboo is sensitive to chlorine and fluoride in tap water! Tap water may cause the leaves to turn yellow. It is recommended to use filtered water or let tap water stand for a day before using.
๐ก๏ธ Temperature and humidity
Ideal range: 16-29ยฐC (normal room temperature)
Cold resistance: Low! Do not expose to temperatures below 10ยฐC.
- Heat: Tolerates well up to 32ยฐC
- Cold: Sensitive! Do not place near an air conditioner or an open window in winter
- Humidity: Likes medium-high humidity
๐ชด Growing tool
Growing in water:
- โ Glassware (most popular)
- โ Stones/pebbles for stabilization
- โ Sealed ceramic utensils
- ๐ก Transparent container allows you to see the roots and water level
Growing in the ground:
- Well-drained soil mixture
- Flowerpot with drainage holes
- You can add perlite to improve drainage.
๐งช Fertilization
Important principle: Lucky bamboo needs almost no fertilizer! It is a humble plant that grows well without any fertilization at all.
When to fertilize (if at all)?
- Once every 2-3 months (in spring and summer only)
- Or once or twice a year
- In winter - no need for fertilization!
What fertilizer?
- A small drop of liquid fertilizer for houseplants
- Nitrogen-rich fertilizer (N)
- Diluted to 1/4 of the recommended concentration!
Over-fertilization is one of the common causes of yellowing! If the cane is yellowing from the bottom - you may have fertilized too much. Stop fertilizing and change the water.
โ๏ธ Pruning and propagation
Pruning
Lucky bamboo does not require much pruning. The canes themselves maintain their height, but the leaves will continue to grow.
- โ๏ธ Remove yellow or dry leaves
- โ๏ธ Trim leaves that are too long if you want a neat look
- โ๏ธ Side branches (offshoots) can be cut for propagation
๐ Multiplication - very easy!
- Cut an offshoot with several leaves.
- Or cut part of the main stem above a node (ring)
- Place in a container with clean water.
- Wait for roots to grow (2-4 weeks)
- Continue growing in water or transfer to soil
๐ก Tip: A long stem can be cut into several pieces, each with at least one node, and all of them can become new plants!
๐ง Common problems and solutions
๐ก Yellowing leaves
Possible reasons:
- Chlorinated/fluoridated water
- Direct sunlight is too strong
- Overfertilization
- Contaminated/old water
Solution: Change to filtered water, move from a location that is too bright, stop fertilizing.
๐ค Yellowing cane
Possible reasons:
- Root rot
- Contaminated water over time
- Severe overfertilization
Solution: If the cane is yellow - it's usually too late. Cut off the top green part and re-root it!
๐ค Brown leaf edges
Possible reasons:
- Air is too dry
- Water with minerals
- Lack of irrigation
Solution: Spray the leaves with water, replace with filtered water, increase humidity
๐ฟ Pale/faded leaves
Possible reasons:
- Too much light
- Lack of nutrients
Solution: Move to a shadier location, or add a drop of fertilizer.
๐ฆ Algae in water
Reasons:
- Water stands for a long time
- Exposure to light
Solution: Change water more often, use a light-proof container, wash the stones
๐ Pests
Common pests:
- Mites (spider mites)
- Aphids
- Bluish
Solution: Wash the plant with water, use neem oil or potassium soap.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
No! Despite its name and similar appearance, Lucky Bamboo belongs to the Dracaena family and not to true bamboo. It got its name from its green, ringed stem that resembles bamboo.
With proper care, Lucky Bamboo can live for many years - up to 10-15 years or even more! In water it usually lives for 1-2 years, but if transferred to soil - it can live much longer.
The curls are artificially made by growers! They rotate the plant relative to the light in a controlled manner for months to create the twisted shapes. At home, the plant will grow straight.
Both are good! Growing in water is easier and allows you to see the roots. Growing in soil allows the plant to grow larger and live longer. Choose according to your preference.
The canes themselves do not grow back after being cut (unlike true bamboo). What does grow are the leaves and offshoots that emerge from the nodes.
East - for health and family. Southeast - for wealth and prosperity. On the desk - for career success. At the entrance to the house - for a positive reception.
In Feng Shui, the red ribbon represents the element of fire and increases positive energy. It also "activates" the blessings of the plant. It is recommended to tie a red ribbon around the container or reeds.
