LECA Pebbles – The Complete Guide to Growing Plants Without Soil

Everything you need to know about the clay pebbles changing the world of gardening 🌱

Have you heard about LECA balls and wondered what they actually are? You're not alone. In recent years, LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) has become one of the most popular growing media among plant enthusiasts — and for good reason. They offer a clean, simple, and effective way to grow healthy houseplants, without making a mess at home and without worries about overwatering.

1 What is LECA, anyway?

LECA stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate. Simply put? These are small pebbles made from natural clay that is fired in a kiln at very high temperatures (about 1,200 degrees Celsius). During the firing process, the clay expands — much like popcorn — creating light, porous, and round pebbles.

This porous structure is the secret to its magic: each pebble absorbs water and releases it slowly to the plant's roots. At the same time, the spaces between the pebbles allow for excellent airflow — which is exactly what roots need to breathe and grow.

2 Why should you grow in LECA?

💧
Preventing overwatering
The #1 reason for houseplant death? Overwatering leading to root rot. LECA solves this — it absorbs only the amount of water it can hold, and the rest drains away. This ensures roots always get the right amount.
🫧
Excellent root aeration
Unlike soil that can compress and choke the roots, LECA creates natural air pockets. Roots breathe freely, leading to healthier growth and a robust root system.
🚫
No pests or mold
If you're tired of fungus gnats flying out of your pots, LECA is the answer. Because it's an inorganic medium, it lacks the organic matter that attracts pests. Mold and fungi? Almost impossible.
♻️
Reusable for years
Unlike soil that needs replacing every year, LECA can be washed, sterilized, and reused again and again. A one-time investment that pays off over time.
✨
Absolute cleanliness
No soil = no mess. Caring for plants in LECA is clean, organized, and perfect for indoor gardening. Even when repotting, there are no soil crumbs on the floor.

3 How do you use LECA balls?

There are several main ways to use LECA — choose what suits you best:

🌊 Semi-hydroponic growth (most popular!)

Plant directly in LECA balls using a transparent container or one with drainage holes. Add water with hydroponic fertilizer up to a quarter of the container's height. The pebbles absorb and transfer water to the roots through capillary action — like a natural irrigation system!

🪴 Mixing with soil

Adding LECA balls to regular potting mix significantly improves drainage and aeration. Recommended ratio: about 30% LECA and 70% soil. Perfect for plants that like well-draining media such as orchids, aroids, and succulents.

⬇️ Bottom drainage layer

A 2-3 cm layer of LECA at the bottom of the pot, under the soil, prevents water accumulation and maintains excellent drainage. A very easy and simple method for beginners.

🎨 Decorative top dressing

A layer of LECA on the surface gives a neat and beautiful look, prevents surface drying, and discourages pests. Bonus: colored LECA balls can add a design touch!

4 How to prepare LECA for use?

Important! Do not use LECA balls straight from the bag. They arrive with dust and residues from the manufacturing process that can harm roots. Preparation is simple:

1
Initial rinsing
Rinse the pebbles under running water until the water runs clear. This removes the clay dust.
2
Soaking in water
Soak the pebbles in water for at least 12-24 hours. This allows them to absorb water and be ready for use.
3
Water change (recommended)
For best results, dump the water after 24 hours and soak again in clean water for another 24 hours. This removes even more residue.
4
Ready to use!
Now the pebbles are saturated, clean, and ready. You can plant, mix with soil, or use as a drainage layer.

5 How do you transition a plant from soil to LECA?

The transition from soil to LECA is a process that requires a little patience, but it's worth it. Here's how to do it right:

🌱 Remove the plant from the pot carefully and shake off most of the soil from the roots.

🚿 Wash the roots thoroughly under lukewarm running water until they are completely clean of soil. This is the most important step!

✂️ Trim damaged roots — soft, brown, or rotten roots should be pruned. Leave only healthy, white roots.

🏺 Fill the container with a layer of LECA (already soaked), place the plant, and fill around the roots with more LECA.

💧 Add water with hydroponic fertilizer up to a quarter of the container's height. The water should not touch the roots directly — the pebbles will transfer the moisture to them.

💡
Important tip!
LECA is an inorganic medium — meaning there is no food for the plant in it. You must add hydroponic fertilizer to the water! Without it, the plant will start to show signs of nutritional deficiency. It is also recommended to check the pH of the water and ensure it is close to 6.0-6.5.

6 Which plants are suitable for growing in LECA?

Not every plant is suited for a move to LECA, but many popular houseplants actually thrive with this method:

🌿 Pothos
Perfect for beginners. Roots quickly in LECA and is suitable for semi-hydro.
Loves root aeration. Grows beautifully in large containers with LECA.
🌸 Orchids
A classic combination! Phalaenopsis orchids perform excellently in LECA. Try our orchid potting mix as well.
All philodendron varieties are suitable — they love humidity and well-draining mediums.
🌱 Syngonium
Roots quickly and responds excellently to transitioning into LECA.
🌿 Aglaonema
A forgiving plant that adapts well to the LECA method.

🧪
Fertilizing in LECA
Use a dedicated hydroponic fertilizer — not regular soil fertilizer! Hydroponic fertilizer contains all the micronutrients the plant needs. It is recommended to fertilize once a week and replace the water solution every 2-4 weeks to prevent salt buildup.
🔄
When to replace LECA?
LECA pebbles last for 1-2 years before the pores start to clog from salt accumulation. A sign of this: white spots on the pebbles. For sanitization and reuse — boil them in hot water for 20 minutes or soak in a water solution with a little vinegar.
📊
pH Management
LECA pebbles themselves are pH neutral, but it is important to monitor the pH level of the water solution. The ideal range is 5.5-6.5. If the pH is too high, the plant will not be able to absorb nutrients. You can buy a simple pH test kit to keep track.
❓
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix LECA with perlite? Absolutely! Combining it with perlite and coco chips creates an excellent substrate for aroids.

Is LECA suitable for outdoor plants? Yes, but note — LECA does not provide good insulation against extreme temperatures. In the Israeli summer, be careful of direct exposure to strong sun.

Which pot is best? A transparent container (like glass) is excellent because you can see the water level. You can also use ceramic pots with drainage holes.
