Planting Bulbs and Corms in Autumn: The Guide for Garden and Balcony
Want a balcony full of color in the spring? The end of summer and the beginning of autumn are the time to choose bulbs, prepare a well-draining pot, and plan precise planting—without guessing the depth, direction, or amount of water.
Planting bulbs and corms seems simple, but three details determine the result: the right timing for the species, good drainage, and precise preparation instructions. Anemones and ranunculus are actually sold as small tuberous corms, hyacinths as larger bulbs, and each comes with its own instructions. Therefore, this guide provides a clear rule of thumb — and then notes where the product page and packaging take precedence over any general rule.
Why plant in the autumn?
Bulbs and corm plants store food in an underground organ. Many spring-blooming species begin to develop roots in the cool season, long before leaves or buds are visible. The RHS recommends planting spring-blooming species in the autumn, and Iowa State University emphasizes that the soil must be well-drained to reduce rot.
In Israel, there is no reason to copy a European or American schedule. Work according to the product at hand: on Deco Garden's live product pages, anemones and ranunculus are intended for planting in October–December; hyacinths in November–January, after the cooling period indicated on the page. If the packaging in your hand presents updated or different instructions — they prevail.
Do not soak or chill all bulbs using the same method. The anemones and ranunculus on this list require soaking according to the product page; the hyacinth requires chilling. Improper preparation can damage the propagation material even before planting.
Before you start: good bulbs, the right vessel, and well-draining medium
Choose firm bulbs and corms, without soft areas, strange odors, or signs of rot. A dry outer skin is not necessarily a problem, but a soft body or active mold is a sign to stop. If you are not planting immediately, store the material in a cool, dry, and ventilated place — and only if the product requires chilling, follow the temperature and duration listed on it.
For planting on a balcony, choose a pot with real drainage holes. The RHS guide for bulb pots suggests a large vessel, at least about 30 cm in width and depth, to allow for a layer of medium and planting depth. A saucer is convenient for floor protection, but water should not be left standing in it. Airy potting medium is more suitable than heavy garden soil that has been compacted inside a container.

How to plant bulbs and corms: 7 steps
- Read the specific instructions. Mark the timing, preparation, depth, spacing, and lighting for each product. Do not assume that everything that looks like a bulb gets the same treatment.
- Prepare the propagation material. Soak the anemones and ranunculus on this list for 12 hours and plant immediately. Chill the hyacinth for 4–6 weeks at around 5°C and plant in November–January, according to the product page.
- Check drainage. Fill a clean pot with medium, without clogging the holes. Leave an empty rim so that irrigation doesn't overflow with soil.
- Determine depth. A common rule of thumb is covering two to three times the height of the bulb. Measure from the base of the bulb to the surface of the medium, but an explicit product instruction takes precedence.
- Place in the correct orientation. With a clear bulb, the pointed end faces up. In a ranunculus, the "fingers" face down. If there is no clear side and no instruction, you can lay it on its side instead of forcing a wrong orientation.
- Cover gently. Replace the medium without forcing it down. Space according to the product size; in a group that is too dense, ventilation and care become more difficult.
- Water to stabilize. The first watering connects the medium to the bulb and encourages root start. Afterward, check for moisture and do not water automatically; a saturated medium over time increases the risk of rot.
Drainage is not an accessory to planting — it is the condition that allows roots to start working without remaining in water.Balcony work principle
Three options for spring blooms — and what differs between them
Red Anemones: Focused color
The package includes 10 corms. According to the product page, soak them for 12 hours in water in a shaded place and plant in October–December immediately after soaking. This is a simple choice for those who want a solid red patch of color, in a pot or a group in a bed.

Mixed Ranunculus: Variety of colors
There are also 10 corms here, but the shape is different: after 12 hours of soaking, plant immediately, with the "fingers" facing down. The mix is suitable for those who prefer a varied look rather than a single-colored bed. Do not apply the ranunculus orientation to a round hyacinth bulb.

Mixed Hyacinth: Large bulb and fragrant bloom
The hyacinth package includes 3 bulbs. Unlike the anemones and ranunculus, the product page requires chilling for 4–6 weeks at around 5°C, and only then planting in November–January. This is a good example of the fact that the word "bulbs" in daily conversation is not a uniform care recipe.

Planting in one pot or in layers?
For beginners, a pot with one type is the easiest choice: the planting time, depth, and watering are uniform, and it is easy to know what is supposed to sprout. For those who are already familiar with the products, you can create a "lasagna" of bulbs in layers — the large and late ones at the bottom, the small and early ones above them — provided there is enough depth, that each layer is covered with medium, and that the care times are compatible with each other.
In any case, plan the location according to the light the product requires and leave access for watering. At the beginning of the season, check the medium with your finger before each watering. After blooming, remove the wilted flower, but let the leaves yellow naturally; they return nutrients to the bulb for the next season.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do you plant bulbs and corms in Israel?
According to the product: the anemones and ranunculus appearing here are intended for October–December; hyacinths for November–January after chilling. There is no one date for all species.
Do you have to soak bulbs before planting?
Not all of them. The anemones and ranunculus pages here indicate a 12-hour soak. Hyacinth requires chilling and not the same soaking. Always check the exact instructions.
At what depth do you plant a bulb?
A professional rule of thumb is two to three times the bulb's height, from the base to the soil surface. If the product indicates a different depth, follow the product.
Can you plant bulbs in a pot on the balcony?
Yes. Choose a deep and wide vessel with drainage holes, airy medium, and a location suitable for light requirements. Empty excess water from the saucer.
How much do you water after planting?
Water once to settle the medium around the bulb. Afterward, check for moisture and prevent prolonged saturation; with the appearance of growth, monitor more frequently.
What to remember
- Timing and preparation are determined by the species and product — not by one rule for all bulbs.
- A pot with drainage holes and airy medium are more important than frequent watering.
- Plant at the correct depth and orientation, water to stabilize, and prevent standing water.
